LDS Collections

Throughout the last century, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the LDS Church has engaged in an extensive program to accurately compile all available records of genealogical value into an organized system and then preserve it on microfilm. This ongoing project includes the compilation of the International Genealogical Index (IGI). The IGI contains information submitted by LDS (Mormon) researchers and records obtained from non-Mormon contributors, and data taken from various birth, death or marriage records that Church members have microfilmed. The IGI contains hundreds of millions of records of people who lived between 1500 and 1900, primarily in the United States, Canada and Europe. By making so many resources available, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has significantly contributed to the increasing interest in genealogy over the last couple of decades. Information is available free or at a nominal cost through the Internet, through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.
